Flashback

OUR Stockport Flashback book brought back memories for a former Stopfordian now living in sun-drenched Western Australia.

Bryan Horton, from Busselton, is particularly interested in a picture of former Prime Minister Harold Wilson in characteristic pose with a pipe during a visit to Bryan's former school, Cheadle Heath Primary.

Bryan would like to hear from anyone who knows more about the visit by the late prime minister, particularly the date and from those who recall an incident involving a landmine.

He guesses the picture, which also shows Andrew Bennett, still an MP, and the former leader of Greater Manchester Council, Bernard Clarke, was taken at the opening of school extensions.

Bryan was born in Davenport in 1926, but lived in Cheadle for many years before his marriage in 1955 and move Down Under in 1970.

He wants to share his memories of his school days as a ten-year-old at Cheadle Heath Primary.

"In those days it was nicknamed 'the Tin Hut' due to the corrugated iron, a material which could not be used out here in Australia as it would melt during our very hot summers," he said.

"The headmaster at that time was a Mr N Arnfield.

"During school hours one could be treated to either the aroma from a Smith's crisps factory or the aroma of hops from the nearby Farmer's Arms!" he added.

Bryan recalled that during World War Two a landmine dropped on to the playing fields which were next to the school, causing consternation among pupils.
