DRAMA: An Ideal Husband, Royal Exchange, until Jan 26

14/12/2007

TREAT yourself to an early Christmas present of tickets next week when one of Oscar Wilde’s most enjoyable plays comes to Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre.

An Ideal Husband is an entertaining blend of comedy, morality, sex and politics which explores human frailty and social hypocrisy in Edwardian London society. Sir Robert Chiltern is to all intents and purposes the ideal husband, but when beautiful dinner guest Mrs Cheveley arrives with a secret about his past, a train of events is set in motion which could easily change everything they hold dear.

Award-winning Joanne Riding, whose previous Royal Exchange roles include Maggie in Hobson’s Choice, is the scheming beauty. Simon Robson takes the role of Chiltern, with Rae Hendrie (Jess Mackenzie in BBC TV’s Monarch of the Glen) as Lady Chiltern.

The production is directed by the theatre’s artistic director Braham Murray, whose previous successes there with Oscar Wilde plays include a sell-out version of The Importance of Being Earnest and Lady Windermere’s Fan, which transferred to the West End. Ring 0161 833 9833 to book.
