THEATRE: Hitting Home, Zion Arts Centre, Hulme, Mon 9th and Tues 10th
Angela Kelly4/ 6/2008
EX-EASTENDERS actress Babita Pohoomull takes the lead in hard-hitting drama Hitting Home.
Babita, who won fans as Preeti in the soap, stars in the adaptation of Angela Ashworth’s acclaimed biography chronicling the life of Andrea, a mixed-race child whose adored father died when she was five.
Silently, she faces racist taunts growing up in the Seventies and can only watch as her mother freefalls through debilitating depression.
When a sister is born to her stepfather, the abuse inside the home turns physical, which worsens when a second stepfather appears on the scene. When years of terrifying violence and life on the breadline, Andrea finds comfort in her love of learning, and escapes to Oxford University.
This gritty, moving and ultimately heartening story comes to Zion Arts Centre as part of a UK tour.
