FESTIVAL: Exodus 08, Urbis, Sun 31 Aug

THE arts and culture of Manchester’s refugee communities will be celebrated at this year’s Exodus Festival.
The free event, held at Urbis and in its Cathedral Gardens surroundings, features traditional and modern sounds from such diverse countries as Zimbabwe, Somalia, Eritrea, Uganda, Bosnia and Afghanistan, plus freshly prepared food and creative workshops for children.
Those serving up international dishes include Cameroon-born nurse Melanie Ngangen, who is on a mission to make French Afro-Caribbean cuisine healthier, while Pakistani musician Kashif Ali will be playing bhangra tunes with his band Asian Music Talent.
The event includes a performance from the Royal Exchange’s Refugee Theatre Company, whose production Scared explores destitution among asylum seekers and stars actors from Iraq, Burundi, Angola, Tanzania, Nigeria and the Congo.
Children should be amply catered for with workshops on percussion, Kurdish art and MCing, while other attractions include a Moroccan coffee and storytelling space and world craft stalls.
