MUSIC: Sleeping Beauty, Bridgewater Hall, Fri 5 Dec
Angela Kelly3/12/2008
THE BBC Philharmonic is reunited with chief guest conductor Vassily Sinaisky for the first time this season at an event this Friday.
He conducts Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.5 and the Prologue and Act 1 from The Sleeping Beauty at Bridgewater Hall at 7pm. The concert goes out live on BBC Radio 3’s Performance on 3.
Vassily trained in Leningrad under the great Ilya Musin and won Gold at the Karajan Competition in Berlin in 1973. He worked closely with Kondrashin at the Moscow Philharmonic, where he was music director for five years.
He has been the BBC Philharmonic’s chief guest conductor since 1995 and is also chief conductor of Sweden’s Malmo Symphony Orchestra. Tchaikovsky’s immensely popular Fifth Symphony is coloured by the dark shadows of Fate before emerging triumphantly into light. His music for The Sleeping Beauty has ensured its place as one of the most famous of all ballet works.
