Reviews: Blondie, Manchester Apollo

THE Blondie comeback ship has been cruising along nicely since 1998 now, aided by a couple of fantastic singles. Fast forward to 2005, and with nothing new to promote (save an umpteenth Best Of), they've struck an iceberg.

There's a short, sharp stab of pain at seeing Blondie on the Christmas nostalgia circuit. The band were once sheer, unadulterated pop-punk perfection and their last single - 2003's prescient, lost electropop hit Good Boys - proved they had more to offer.

Harry may be 60, but she actually seemed a damn sight younger than the majority of the crowd. While an odd setlist, exhuming Parallel Lines album tracks, is hampered by the soundsystem, and a band veering into pub-rock territory, there are flickers of greatness. Clem Burke's drumming is always a thing of wonder.

One Way Or Another, Rapture, Call Me, and End To End provide a requisite tinge of excitement. But the main problem is they're not bad, merely mediocre, and that's probably the most damning thing you could ever accuse Blondie of.
