Fashion - how to get the goth look
Faye Marriott26/ 1/2006
Goth style is enjoying a revival thanks to Coronation Street's Rosie and Craig, and soon your daughter - or son - could be slapping on the make up and dressing head to toe in black. Fashion writer Faye Marriott asked two young Manchester workers to try the look for a day.
MOVE over Craig and Rosie, because there's a new hot goth couple
in town.
Inspired by Coronation Street's very own Romeo and Juliet, we
decided to recreate their unique look on office workers John
Redgate and Rebecca Taylor.
We asked them to move over to the dark side in gothic clothing and
make-up.... and as Craig's leather coat and eyeliner prove, it's
not a look only for girls. Although certain people are partial to
head-to-toe goth get-up, it's not everyone's cup of tea for day to
day wear.
However, that's the great thing about this trend; it doesn't
require a full commitment to all things gothic because a few simple
accessories and touches can evoke the Goth theme.
For example, head to toe black has long been a fashion staple, and
by adding a bit of black eyeliner, or by laying off the blusher and
the bronzer (and even trying a bit of talcum powder on your skin),
you'll be well on you're way to goth heaven. Or hell - whichever
you may prefer!
Boys should get in on the make-up action too.
The Killers, Greenday and Robbie Williams have all been known to
dabble in a bit a kohl eye pencil or black nail varnish, such as
NYC's black nail enamel.
This look doesn't mean that you have to go out and buy a whole new
wardrobe either because you probably have some of the key pieces
already.
And if you do choose to buy invest in Goth must-haves that can be
worn throughout the year, such as black drainpipes, for boys and
girls, black jackets and black t-shirts. Just make sure it's
black.
Anything brighter, (apart from red), just doesn't wash with the
goth crowd. In fact, you can even do this look on a budget by dying
your clothes!
Accessories can be the same for both sexes and should be loaded
on.
Low slung studded belts, chains, chunky rings and anything
featuring a skull will all do the trick as long as they're leather,
velvet or chunky silver.
And you can achieve all your gothic fashion desires at Affleck's
Palace in the Northern Quarter.
There is an abundance of boutiques brimming full of goodies to help
you on your way to the dark side, and should definitely be the
first port of call to help achieve this look.
Failing that the high street has, of course, cottoned on to the
trend and black lace cami's and skirts can be found all over the
place.
You can take goth fashion as extreme or as minimal as you want to,
by adding a few simple touches to your existing style or by
adopting a totally new look.
One thing's for sure, this is a style which can be adopted with
ease... add an obligatory scowl and you'll be on your way.
