City popfest has Sparkle

MANCHESTER Pride festival is back with 10 days of events that bring famous musical names to the city.

Iconic Soft Cell frontman Marc Almond will be headlining along with pop princess Jamelia as part of the star-studded line-up in a hectic programme celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender life.

A vast range of events starts today and culminates in a Bank Holiday Big Weekend - lasting 78 hours from 6pm on Friday, August 25 to midnight on Monday, August 28.

Festival director Sarah Rowland said: "Manchester Pride must cater for a diverse range of musical tastes. This year, we've really worked hard to maintain a balance between the acts that will be performing." Fresh from the success of transgender Sparkle 2006, which saw more than 5,000 attending, Sparkle organisers will be programming a full evening of entertainment on Saturday, August 26.

This is the first year that the organisation will have an official presence at Manchester Pride festival with a meet-and-greet session and evening entertainment. The fun kicks off tonight at Essential, on Minshull Street, with pop music in the main arena courtesy of DJs Kev and Nicksy and funky house in the lounge with Alan Stevens, Josh Cole and Aphrodite.

Tomorrow night at the same venue it's Freak night full of weird and wonderful things - from pole dancers to drag queens!
