A taste for the classics
by Angela Kelly25/ 8/2006
PRISE yourself off the sofa this Bank Holiday weekend - there's
absolutely no excuse to stay at home when events to suit every age
and interest are there to tempt you out.
Dads and lads in particular will enjoy a trip to Capesthorne Hall,
near Macclesfield, where tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday, the 22nd
Cheshire Vintage and Classic Car Event and Classic Bike and Rider
Day will bring plenty of vroom to the stately home of the Bromley
Davenport family.
This epic gathering of special vehicles will include everything
from pre-1950s examples to modern day classics. They include the
MGB, Morris Minor and E-type Jaguar, plus BSA and Velocettes in the
bikes' section.
Join other fans when around 20 clubs will be there, including Stag
Owners, Jaguar Enthusiasts, the Staffordshire Classic Car Club and
the Potteries Vintage Club.
As well as the 275 club vehicles on display, expect a further 250
private individuals attending with models ranging from the Morris
8s of the Thirties to the MGs (right) and Triumphs of the Fifties,
Sixties and Seventies. There will be competitions with prizes and
trophies and a top motoring correspondent will be giving expert
commentary.
Autojumble and trade stands will keep the genuine enthusiasts happy
and quad bikes and a bouncy castle should entertain younger
visitors.
The Jacobean-style hall will be open for guided tours at £2 a head
and there are lakeside walks and formal gardens to wander
around.
Entry to the event costs £5 for adults, £4 for senior citizens and
£1 for children aged seven to 14. Parking is free and opening times
are 10am to 4pm on both days.
And if stylish MG sports cars are your passion, Stapeley Water
Gardens, near Nantwich, offer a special day tomorrow (Saturday)
when the MG Owners' Club descends on the popular venue.
From 10am to 3pm, visitors can view 15 fine examples of these
classic sports cars, talk to the owners and get information and
expert advice. There will also be charity tombola and there is
plenty to see at Stapeley itself, including exotic animals and
plants in The Palms centre.
Entry to the park and the car display is free but entry to The
Palms is £4.45 for adults, £3.95 for senior citizens and
concessions and £2.60 for children. Ring 01270 623868 for more
information.
Still on the cars theme, visitors to Quarry Bank Mill and the
beautiful Styal country estate in Cheshire on Monday can enjoy a
huge Vintage and Veteran Car Display in the Mill Yard.
Parking is £2.90 and the National Trust attraction, with its wealth
of rural and historic interests and children's attractions, is open
from 11am with last admission 4pm.
COUNTRY pursuits of every kind - from falconry to ferret racing -
are on offer at Tatton Park on Sunday and Monday as the famous
venue hosts its own country show.
See gundogs and sheepdogs at work, enjoy the excitement of the
scurry driving championships as a pair of ponies pull a vehicle
through a complex course against the clock, and watch four dogs and
their owners take part in flyball racing - a knockout relay
race.
You can learn the secrets of bee-keeping and see the working heavy
horses move logs with remarkable skill. Try your hand at archery or
put your pet into the dog show.
There's a craft village, food hall, chainsaw sculptures and trade
stands, plus puppet shows and amusements.
The fun starts at 10am and lasts until 6pm on both days, with
admission £6 for adults, £5 for senior citizens and £3 for
children. Parking is £4 per car or £2 for disabled drivers.
For more information, ring 01283 820548.

two days of lively events and activities related to the fascinating
exhibitions, displays and events that take place all year
round.
Tours and hands-on activities offer an enjoyable blend of learning
and laughs as visitors of all ages can make souvenirs and have a
Forties make-over.
There are games, giveaways and competitions. And, if the weather
isn't kind, you can pop into the special exhibition Against The
Odds: The Story of Bomber Command in the Second World War, to find
out about the lives of the nation's heroes.
Admission is free and it's open from noon to 4pm on both days. Find
