Fried breakfasts are a strong draw for many
Advice for blobby bobbies
OPINION: Diane Cooke4/ 9/2008
IT'S comforting to know that in our obesity-obsessed society it's not only schoolkids who are being picked upon by politicians for being fat.
Now those skinny minnies in the Lib Dem party are calling for police officers to shape up or ship out.
The party's Home Affairs spokesman, Chris Huhne, is calling for fitness tests and free gyms for officers to ensure they're a match for the "yobs and criminals who blight our neighbourhoods".
Scottish coppers have been told to lay off canteen breakfasts and, presumably, battered deep-fried Mars bars, because some are too heavy for their squad cars.
Well, for all those blobbies on the beat who can't give up their bacon, eggs and sausage, let me tell you that a re-worked version of the famous low-carb Atkins diet is flying off the bookshelves in America.
The diet courted controversy when it was deemed to be unhealthy as folk shunned carbs in favour of fry-ups. Even fruit and veg were off the menu.
Lean protein
Then after a number of health scares, including heart disease and bowel cancer and the death of its founder, Dr Robert Atkins, the diet's popularity plummeted ... strange that.
But it's now accepted that Dr Atkins didn't die as a result of too much meat and butter, but from a rare condition called cardiomyopathy. So, it's no wonder that The All-New Atkins Advantage is being seen as the fatties' saviour, because one thing's certain it did drop weight fast, even if bad breath and constipation were nasty side-effects.
The new plan contains the same fat-burning principles as the original but is healthier, according to its authors, Strongman Stuart Trager and Colette Heimowitz.
Instead of all-things fried it promotes lean protein and offers more fresh vegetables, good fats and exercise than the original.
And if that doesn't work for our coppers maybe they should follow the example of roly-poly comic Johnny Vegas, who is in three shows and working on a fourth, and has shed stones through sheer hard work and nervous energy.
Somehow, I think they'll plump for the Atkins diet.
