Rock around the clock

Peter Devine
19/ 9/2007

IT was a case of the storm before the calm as hundreds of worried Northern Rock customers queued over the weekend to draw tens of thousands of pounds out of savings from the town centre Chestergate branch.

The crisis was triggered after Northern Rock went to the Bank of England for additional funds after a squeeze on borrowing money on the international money markets.

I queued for an hour and a half to withdraw as much money as I could from my local branch of Northern Rock only to be told that as I was not a customer I would not be entitled to a penny. This kind of heavy handed customer service smacks of 'what's good for the goose is good for the gander'. Never again.
