Sink or swim?
Exclusive by Kirsty Elleray and Jenny Dixon19/ 3/2008
TOP British swimmers could be forced out of Stockport by ‘filthy’ conditions at Grand Central Pools.
Swimmers and coaches at Stockport Metros, who train at the facility run by Serco, described squalid conditions that are affecting their preparations for this year’s Olympics - and threatening their health.
Grand central is a great facility to have in Stockport, BUT the changing facilities are dire. I took my son there a few weeks back and I was amazed how bad the conditions had become. The showers (or lack of them) are filthy and the cubilals are not much better. The place used to be great and clean a few years ago but now are just a mess. Which is a shame because the staff there are all very helpful and polite.

PS. I'd rather swim in the Mersey!

I used to swim at Grand Central every morning but it really did turn my stomach sometimes. The pool itself was fine, but the changing areas are disgusting, I felt dirty just looking at them. It's not exactly cheap to use the facilities there so I'm sure they can afford to spruce it up.

Grand Central Pools has been going downhill for years. Not only are the conditions filthy and the changing areas in need of an update, the security is (or was certainly the last time I visited) non existent. Don't fob the public off with lame excuses, employ someone who knows what they are doing.

I took my 4 year old there at Christmas as I no longer live in the hood and I thought it was alright. I paid about £4 and I reckon this Cassie bird pays nicks so what does she expect for free? Some people are never satisfied. I'll continue to fund your swimming dream despite the fact you wont win as you are not Australian. But the Press will announce you as brave but you are not brave enough to swim in a pool with a hair in!

Should less emphasis be placed on the results of tests and more emphasis on general education for children?
