Travellers are drawn to town

26/ 3/2008

NEARLY half the illegally camped travellers in the north west are pitched in Stockport.

In July 2007, the last date for which official statistics are available, the region had 151 travellers’ caravans parked up on sites against the wishes of landowners.

I find it disgusting that any of our tax money should be used to provide FREE places for travellers. I do not find it at all acceptable teh way in which the land is being treated. I do not care whether you have a certain lifestyle you wish to live and how you wish to do it but using someone's private land is not ok. I pay stupid amounts of taxes and it is criminal that £73,000 went to getting travellers to leave land they know they shouldn't be on. Supplying them with council property is pandering to a generation of people who lack the will or responsibility to be good citizens.

"Statistics released by insurance company Endsleigh, and publicised the length and breadth of the country, this week claimed Stockport homes were 49.8 percent more at risk of break-ins than the national average." Coincidence?

It’s hardly surprising that the travellers prefer Stockport to other areas in the North West – we have a council and a local police force that run scared whenever the Human Rights Act is muttered!. There are many other boroughs around the M60 ring that adopt a much tougher stance and make life uncomfortable for these folk. The solution is simple without tripping over the Human Rights Act

... Do these people fly tip? – that’s illegal … Do these people pay income tax? – If not that’s illegal! … Do these people pay National Insurance? – If not that’s illegal!! … Are their vehicles road worthy, taxed and insured? – If not that’s illegal! … Do they remove locks, fences or gates to gain access to sites – That’s illegal! … Do they pay for their water?, sewage treatment? Etc

If you cannot move travellers on because they hide behind Human Rights Act then it wouldn’t be too difficult to use, or threaten to use, the above against them. Additionally, if the Senior Police Officers in the area could break themselves away from fretting that Stockport has one of the highest burglary rates in the UK (Yes nice isn’t it!) they have the power to move on a band with 6 vehicles or more without the need to worry a magistrates court. Failing that they could use the Anti-Social Behaviour Act which came into force in February 2004 which allows them to evict groups of only one or more vehicles under certain (basic) circumstances. Come on Stockport – let’s get tough!

Ps If there are any travellers out there who pay all their taxes, never fly tip etc please accept my apologies – it’s just that I’ve never met you yet!

Why does a permanent site have to go to either Adswood or Bredbury (some of the poorest ares of SMBC) why not send them to Cheadle Hulme or Bramhall plenty of fields that can be turned into sites around there.

The solution is simple really. Run them out of town.
