Is your pet a true star?

27/ 3/2008

THE Stockport Express Pet Idol competition is underway. We’ve teamed up with a big-name sponsor to ensure our 2008 search for a star is the biggest and best.

Pets at Home have offered a fabulous set of prizes, worth an amazing £500 for the overall winner.

I agree. There should be a facility to vote online. I know it's only a bit of fun but surely the idea is to get as many people voting as possible. Postal votes are so old fashioned and kids won't vote that way but probably would via the internet.

I have to say what's all the fuss about? This is a bit of light hearted fun in a world that has become at times depressing and sad with all the bad news around - this most certainly brightens my day looking at all the gorgeous pics of the animals and I would rather open the paper and see them than the usual horrendous crimes and their headlines anyday.

How come you cannot vote online?? On the Manchester Evening News Pet idol you can. I have just had a look at them...

I have plenty of fun with my pets which doesn't make me feel like I'm losing brain cells or the will to live as these types of competition do.

But that's my point lindaw, a winner isn't "chosen", pet owners with wads of spare cash and time manage to fix it by sending in hundreds of votes for their animals. It's not fair and it's pointless and takes space away from worthwhile things like news stories and features.

ive just had to enter my little dog into the competion but i cant believe just how they can chose a winner from all these pets because they are all so cute and adoreable.and they all deserve to win.

Phillipa, Of course sales are important. Orange groves don't pay for themselves you know.

I currently have three dog, a cat and dozens of fish, so I am a pet lover. I just fail to see the point of this, apart from selling papers. Competitions like this always get rigged anyway - people with far too much money and time on their hands go out and buy hundreds of copies to vote for their pet over and over. At least actual news stories, even if they are about awful things like crime, have an impact on people's lives.

Obviously you are not a pet lover,i'm sure people would rather open the pages of the paper to a competition, than read somebody has being rob, beaten up etc. A light hearted bit of fun never harmed anyone.

Has it really come to this?! A pathetic pet competition in our otherwise fantastic local paper. Is there a lack of news at the moment? Or journalists? I know it's all about sales these days, but I'd rather have a paper with standards than one that lowers itself to this kind of thing and sells by the bucket-load. Shame on you Stockport Express.
