Taxi firm in angry race storm

Exclusive by Kirsty Elleray

STOCKPORT taxi firm Metro Taxis is at the centre of a race storm after imposing a strict ‘European’ dress code on its drivers.

A self-employed taxi driver and members of local religious groups have all told the Stockport Express they are ‘outraged’ by the firm’s comments made in an in-house newsletter which state: ‘We wish all drivers to adhere to European dress only and no headwear whatsoever’.

If the driver were employed to drive a limo, he would be expected to wear a shirt & tie. No baseball caps or other headwear. culture & religion are completely different things.

   LETS NOT FORGET .............

The owner of any Company has the right to state and apply a dress code for their workers ....... what is wrong with that ???? A Taxi Driver is the public face of this Company and should be dressed semi smartly and that to me would certainly exclude some of the dress styles that some ethnic groups tend to wear. I would certainly have thought that the MEP has more pressing matters to become engaged in (more deserving of the exhorbitant salary he is paid) than this !!

People from different Ethnic backgrounds should remember that this is Britain and although we largely welcome them to our Country, we do not want their cultures and wishes rammed incessently down our throats as so often is the case nowadays, eroding piece by piece the Britishness of our Society !! If the Taxi Driver who complained about this is so incensed, he should have the decency to come forward and state his case without hiding and I respectfully suggest that he should seek employment with a Company that is prepared to let him dress the way he wants !!

What a ridiculous and unfair law. The way you dress doesn't affect your capabilities of doing your job. This rule makes Metro look like complete idiots. I won't be using them again in the future.

It would seem that Metro Taxis are about 25 years too late. Do you not think that we now confuse "race" with "culture"?

This is a disgrace, what's how taxi drivers dress got to do with anything? I suggest they all turn up in lederhosen next week and see if they are 'disabled' then.
