Nazi comment is 'unacceptable'

Alex Scapens

A LEADING councillor has been branded ‘out of order’ after comparing the proposed congestion charge with Nazi propaganda.

Kevin Hogg, Stockport Council’s executive member for Regeneration, made the remark while claiming that the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority (GMPTA) - the organisation behind the proposed congestion charge - is putting out reams of "misinformation" to convince the public of its benefits.

Looks like this leading councillor would benefit from getting out of his car and doing a bit of walking instead.

I totally agree with Roy Gregory - the same thought occurred to me that if Kevin had used Soviet propaganda as an illustration, no one would have said a word. Both Nazi and Soviet propaganda were of the same type: tendentious, mendacious and tedious - exactly like the propaganda for the congestion charge. I suggest to Kevin that he ignore Howard Bernstein and the Zionist lobby, and keep telling it as it is in his own inimitable way. As a resident in his ward, I appreciate the fact that at least he isn't one of the brigade of honey-tongued politicos ...

Using the Nazi comparison was his second mistake. He should have learned from Comrade Livingstone how any even apt reference to the Nazis can fire our Jewish brethren to near incandescence. Had he compared it to Stalin's Russia, nobody would have batted an eyelid.

A salutary lesson in present day freedom of speech and expression and a practical demonstration of true "political correctness".
