Car charges shocker
Eileen Payne and Duncan Ponter30/11/2005
DRIVERS in Stockport will have to shell out up to £1.34 a mile to use the borough's busiest roads if government plans are pushed through.
Isit me? I thought we were already being charged to use these roads! Isnb TMt that why we have the most expensive fuel in Europe? Why we are charged road tax! Why should the people of greater Manchester then have to pay again for something we are already paying for? if the want to relive congestion on the A6 get rid of those stupid bus lanes and if they must remove bus lay-bys and insist buses stop on the A6 holding up the traffic and causing congestion (hardly "cleaner greener safer stronger" Stockport council!) then they should bring back the bus conductor so the traffic can keep flowing, causing less harmful emissions.

I feel it's wrong to charge the congestion charge like this, as I don't have any option but to use the motorway to get to work. If they start charging I may have to pack in my job as it won't be worth going to work. It will end up costing my about B#30+ per week

Many people live on and around the A6 area of Stockport. Does this mean that everytime we wander out of the house to go absolutely anywhere, we will be charged. The government already tax us to breaking point. This is just another stealth tax on drivers, elderly (who need a car) and mothers and Fathers who have to take their children to school. Businesses along the A6 will suffer badly, creating problems with un-employment and loss of earnings and shut downs for many people, while the people in power get richer. We need to make a stand against the tyrants and despots before things get even worse.

If the powers that be want to speed traffic up, why are they creating problems like narrower roads ( like the wide pavement on St Petersgate etc)?
Perhaps they will be happy when only the rich can afford to drive cars like in the early days of motoring!!!

I travel down the A6 through Stockport on a commute to Manchester in the mornings and evenings. Not because I want to, but because I have to drop my daughter off at school on the A6.
If there is to be a charge, I'd like to see exemptions for people with a genuine reason to be on the A6 in the morning, or is this going to be a tax on parents of school kids?
