Waging the war on illegal car parking

Alex Scapens

AN ANGRY internet campaigner is waging war on Stockport's illegal parkers and names Portwood as the borough's hotspot for the driving form of "anti-social behaviour".

You should try living with an alley way at the back of your house that is used constantly as a road by vehicles. I have video's and pictures to prove and highlight the problem, that the council wants nothing to do with. It's to such an extent the path is beginning to give in the middle and all drains are blocked. "Cleaner, Greener, Safer Stronger", hmmm?!!!

We have run a business in Portwood since 1997, and until the council reinstated the yellow parking restriction lines on the roadway in April 2005, we had faced daily abuse and intimidation from daily town centre workers and parkers. But we had to fight to get a parking warden to visit the Portwood area, we highlighted to the council that these inconsiderate parkers were creating a problem that result in a serious accident occuring, and for the last 9 months things have imporoved dramitically!

Its good to see somebody highlighting the problems of illigally parked cars but i personally think the area in question is an industrial estate so its not a massive problem, yet. What i am disgusted about with fellow drivers is people who park in spaces which are designated for people with disabilities and children. you go to any of the big suoermarkets ,morrisons, tesco(the worst ) and handforth dean and you will see this all the time.God do people have no respect/sympathy for designated parking spaces.I wish the big stores would have a purge on these ignorant morons with either a fine or a humiliating ticket on their bmw's and range rovers ,I would laugh out loud.

I cannot believe the response Roy Driver gave - i.e. the bit about wasting the councils time. Elections are due - get rid of this rude person now.

Haven't people got better things to do than complain constantly!

I myself have reported similar parking abuse constantly on Lowfield Road. cars continually park all day on double yellow lines and half on the pavement. There are at least a dozen offenders on any single day and despite assurances from the council no action is being taken against the residents. I reported this as a last resort to a local councillor - Roy Driver. Below is a copy of his reply to me You sould be aware that during the rnovation work the council is not enforcing the parking restrictions as this would prevent the work being done and would penalise residents who cannot park in their normal places. This has been agreed with Traffic and Car Parking and the local residents association have been consulted. We are aware of this and the Council will monitor the situation until the renovation work has been completed and the the parking enforcement will continue as before. One of the regular offending vehicles is actually a council van

In the meantime please do not make complaints as this wastes the time of council staff who issue tickets which then have to be cancelled. I am sure you are awrae of the benefits to all residents that the renovation work will bring to the area and would not wish to slow the work down in any way.
