THE new mayor of Stockport will hold a civic reception to honour rugby union heroes Sale Sharks - and take the chance to urge the team to change its name.

I am an ex-player member of Sale Football Club [1963-66] who is extremely proud of it. The club always did play the best club rugby in Britain [actually the world] and it is good to see them still doing it and proving it. There is a lot of tradition in this club, so whatever happens PLEASE DO NOT take away the name Sale. I can understand the mayor and council wanting to bring even more recognition to the Stockport area, but the people who know, and the people who care, already see the Stockport connection, so changing the name will not make the slightest difference. I just think it is wonderful to see the recognition that rugby in North Cheshire is now getting. And what a thing for a Yorkshireman like me to be saying!

The mayor is totally out of touch with reality, and has somewhat embarassed himself and the council. He should garner the FACTS before he makes what thousands of Stockport supporters bekieve to be inflamatory comments. Its SALE Sharks and its STOCKPORT County. SALE are only temporary residents at Edgeley Park and when they are gone they will be totally forgotten. Stockport is not a "rugby" town.Never has been, isn't ,and NEVER WILL BE!

Rob Quinlan: which people are these you claim the Mayor is so out of touch with? I am a Stockport resident and a Sale Sharks fan. There are between 3 and 4 thousand of us living, voting and paying our Council Tax in Stockport. The Mayor is certainly in touch with our feelings. I would expect OUR council to reflect and acknowledge the views of ALL residents - not just Stockport County fans.

I have no allegiance to Sale as an area. However, as a rugby fan I support the only professional rugby team in the North West who happen to have originated in Sale but now play in my home town.

I certainly hope when elections come around local councillors and the Mayor in particular remember there are almost as many Sale Sharks fans living in the borough as there are County fans. Indeed given our increasing popularity by the time elections come around there may well be more.

You do remember of course that while County play at Edgeley Park the team spends far more time at the training ground in Timperley which is in Trafford? I presume County pay rates on the ground to Trafford Borough Council. Who pays the rates on Edgeley Park to Stockport Borough Council?

What a complete waste of Council Tax payers money - i mean the mayor and the civic reception idea. What a complete joke this is, and the sooner this clown is removed from his mayoral role, the better... and the sooner Sale Sharks return to Sale then it will be even better too... this is a complete waste of Council Tax payers money and one which our mayor should be embarassed about - he must be one of the most clueless mayors this borough has ever had.

   Disgraceful!

Is the Mayor of Stockport really so out of touch with peoples feelings? What a smarmy, fawning toady the so called mayor sounds!

"Civic reception"? The mayor and the people who advise him should hang their heads in shame, the pathetic way in which STOCKPORT COUNCIL have tried to jump on the Sale(TRAFFORD COUNCIL) bandwagon is a disgrace and a kick in the teeth for all Stockport County fans, hopefully these same fans will remember this when The Local Elections come around! Stockport Sharks? To most County fans they are Sale Parasites!!!!
