Blind water-skier’s war on lakeland speed limit

Gemma Rathbone

A RECORD-breaking blind water-skier is threatening a legal challenge against what he calls a 'ridiculous' speed limit on England's largest lake.

I am totally behind Mr. Gerald Price. I believe that the hired craft should be the ones that are restricted. There were a few idiots that behaved badly on the lake, target those that abuse the amenity, not the responsible sport boat users.

One of the consequences of living in a crowded country like England is that you are sometimes forced into close proximity with activities you would rather not have to share space with. There may be some truth in the point of view that water skiing is incompatible with other activities in the crowded conditions that exist in lake Windermere. However, such crowded conditions exist everywhere because too many people can afford to go boating. So what are we supposed to do? Make water skiing illegal in the whole country?

The national park authority and the Friends Of the Lake District seem to regard non motorised boating as a more legitimate past-time than motorised boating and they have sought to impose a measure that is intended to benefit one user group at the expense of another. Are they not imposing their middle class values on everyone else?

Why cannot the water skiers be give alternative facilities in the national park? Why does the national park authority turn down planning applications to use resevoirs for water sports?

We used to go up to Windermere practically every weekend before the ban. We used to have a touring caravan and a 23ft speedboat on site every season at White Cross Bay. Our family and friends all came up with us and brought their caravans and motorhomes. There was always a big crown of us and we frequented the local resturants and spent an absolute fortune over the years. It was our family way of life. The children friends and family members all learned to waterski and wakeboard on the lake. The government run campaigns trying to make people take up sports to excersive and get us all fit and healthy whick in turn saves them money on national health and the only lake in England where we can waterski gets a ban slapped on it. The walkers Association have a lot to answe for. It has been proved that the vehicles travelling round the lake cause more noise levels than any boat and that boats travelling at slow speeds cause more errosion to the banks than boats that are up to planing speed i.e the ones that are waterski-ing. Its infuriating and so upsetting that all our fantastic enjoyable holidays on the lake have come to end. To a walker who can go all over the country and enjoy their pleasure of walking the equivelant would be for every walkway in England to be closed down. HOW WOULD THIS MAKE THEM FEEL? On the old leaflets on the lake it used to say that it was for everyones enjoyment but not anymore. The Walkers Association finally got their SELFISH way after previous attempts to have a ban on Windermere. WHERE IS THE JUSTICE - THERE IS NONE.

All my family & I used to frequently visit Lake Windermere for skiing, jet skiing & wake boarding activities for most of the year. We have spent a fortune there for several years. I think it is absolutely ludicrous that a bye-law was forced onto the lake which was probably introduced by some fat bloke with a sweep over who never does any sort of sporting activity ever? As for the walkers, if they are to moan then why don't they take a good long trip to the outer hebrides?? I've heard it's nice & quiet out there if that's what they're after??! What is wrong with people now a days? What is wrong with a good family activity holiday which includes water sports? We will never be any good in the olympics because there's no where left?? Good luck to the fellow who's doing the blind waterskiing, I'm behind him all the way.

Mr Price is a selfish hypocrite.

He is a member of the United Kingdom Independence Party that wants to scrap the Human Rights Act and is forever bemoaning European laws overturning English laws.

Here we have a prominant UKIP member using the very thing his party is against - European laws and wants to scrap - to overturn an English byelaw.

A case of do as I say not what I do? Very selfish and hypocritical

Having spent nearly 20 years skiing on Windermere we were sad to leave last year. We stayed the extra year to prove a point. We never got caught over the speed limit, but we got fed up of all of the do-gooders complaing so we took our Boat and MONEY!! to Wales.

Yobbos on the water please go and find another annoying hobby like playing very loud music with all your windows open or coughing all the way through a movie at the pictures. You see only the (very ,very small ) minority want these stupid water skis on the water , yeah lets go round and round and round a lake all day annoying everyone . Must be brilliant.
