Town Hall gets a starring role

STOCKPORT Town Hall, the historic seat of democracy in the borough for almost 100 years, has been upgraded to a Grade II* listed building.

Only eight per cent of the UK’s 370,000 listed buildings are Grade II* listed, the second top grading.

For Stockport Town Hall – often nicknamed the wedding cake – it is a timely accolade as the building will be celebrating the centenary of its official opening in July 2008.

The reclassification from Grade II listing to Grade II* was made by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) following a re-survey of listed buildings by English Heritage.

The conservation officer for Stockport Heritage Trust, Ken Dranfield, who is also the chairman of the Blue Plaque committee, said: "This is excellent news, especially as it is the centenary of the building in 2008. It is a fantastic building, which is often called the wedding cake. The building will also be getting a blue plaque next year. The building well deserves an upgrade on its listing."

Councillor Sue Derbyshire, executive member for regeneration, added: "English Heritage re-surveyed the Town Hall extremely thoroughly, and it is now in an exclusive portfolio of local buildings which are Grade II* listed.

"These are Staircase House, Stockport Art Gallery/War Memorial, Chadkirk Chapel and Abney Hall."

A little known fact is that the town hall was nicknamed the wedding cake after marzipan was used as an emergency subsitite for concrete in the upper 'porthcrawl' tower. Although corroding somewhat, it still stands proud to this day.
