DANNY Begara
Bid to immortalise County legend
Peter Devine26/ 9/2007
FOOTBALL legend Danny Bergara, who helped put Stockport on the map over two sensational decades as County manager could now be immortalised with a memorial designed by fans.
Bergara who died in July came to County in 1989, and rescued the team from the football league doldrums, transforming the side into an unbeatable powerhouse over the next two decades.
The ambitious idea for a memorial comes from lifelong County supporter Councillor Colin MacAlister who plans to put a motion before Stockport Council’s meeting tomorrow requesting all parties agree to making funds available to set up a tribute - with fans at the forefront of the ideas process.
Coun MacAlister said: "Danny was a great servant to the town and to the club and he was the start of a lot of good things and he helped put Stockport on the map.
"We are open to suggestions and provided that this wins the approval of all councillors tomorrow evening. I think it would be nice to open it up to the fans to put forward suggestions of the type of memorial they would like to see.
"I don’t think it needs to be expensive, just something that commemorates the life he had, the type of man he was and what he did for the town."
Des Hinks, County’s media manager said: "I can say we would fully endorse the idea and give it our full backing.
"Danny brought so much success to the football club including four visits to Wembley and the signing of County icon Kevin Francis, who scored more than 100 goals for the club.
"I think it’s a nice idea by the Council and it would be great to get the supporters involved by putting forward their suggestions."
Any fans who have an idea of the type of memorial/tribute they would like to see to Danny Bergara should send their ideas to the Stockport Express, Wood Street, Stockport, SK3 OAB - stockportexpress@gmwn.co.uk
