Best place in town

MAMMA MIA! Italian restaurant Amici is the Stockport Express Restaurant of the Year 2007.

Over the past year our editorial team have tasted all that the borough’s eateries have to offer and whittled the competition down to the best 14.

Thanks to dozens of reader votes, the Heaviley restaurant came out top, closely followed by Sanjoy's in the town centre and Los Amigos in Hazel Grove.

One of our team dined at Amici in April and awarded it full marks in each of the five categories - value for money, customer service, menu choice, atmosphere and quality of food.

The only ‘criticism’ was the chef’s generosity,.

Highlights of his evening at the Buxton Road restaurant included a specials board that was brought to the table, the homemade quality, good presentation, wide selection, friendly staff, relaxing surroundings and good prices. Owner George Vassilou, 37, was surprised to be told his restaurant had won the competition, out of more than 40 reviewed.

“It’s fantastic!” he said.“I’m very chuffed, we were dying to know how we had done.”

George has been running Amici for 12 years and started his catering career at college before moving into the restaurant business.

He believes the care he and his team of five waiters and three chefs put into every customer and every meal is what prompted readers to vote for Amici.

George said: “We just try to give good value for money and we are very passionate about our food. We really care about the whole business. I’m here all the time, checking everything, and that’s because I care. That makes the difference.”

I've eaten here and food is alright - nothing special.

If this is the best Stockport has to offer then it's time taxpayers' money was spent on hiring Gordon Ramsey and his Kitchen Nightmares team to clean up the rubbish food on offer in our glorious metropolis!
