Commuters dealt double whammy

STOCKPORT commuters faced chaos today (December 5) thanks to broken down vehicles.

A lorry that burst into flames and spilled fuel on the road closed two lanes of the M60’s clockwise carriageway near junction 1 between 6.30-9am, causing tailbacks for miles.

And a bus broke down on Hempshaw Lane, Offerton, just before Chorlton Grove, in the middle of rush hour, which left traffic backed up all the way down Marple Road.

Commuter Jenny Brook, from Offerton, said: “It hadn’t got close enough to the kerb so there was only room for one car to pass at a time, which meant total gridlock.

“My journey to work in Stockport centre normally takes 10 minutes but today it took an hour.”

Firefighters were quickly on the scene to put out the blazing lorry and the driver was uninjured. He had manoeuvred the vehicle onto the hard shoulder.

Watch Commander Eamonn Lyons, of Whitehill Fire Station, said: “Due to the size of the vehicle and that there was a large diesel spillage we had to close two lanes. There were also additional safety concerns for the crew, due to the fast moving traffic.”

The incidents followed a nightmare Monday morning for drivers who suffered at the hands of temporary traffic lights that Stockport Council had mistakenly left out from the weekend.

As someone who does not use the M60, I had a little chuckle to myself when I heard this news. I have a pleasant stroll to work and so this didn't affect me. Yes indeed, I'm alright jack!

There's not a lot can really be said about this article except "sh*t happens".
