Bah humbug, as hospital cancels Christmas.

IT’S bad enough being stuck in hospital over the festive season, but now patients will be missing out on even more Christmas cheer - as decorations have been banned.

Hospital bosses are taking a Scrooge-like approach this year, banning sparkly baubles and wreaths from wards, fearing they could spread infection.

Instead of the usual glitter and garlands gracing the wards, Stepping Hill will be keeping ‘spore-harbouring’ decorations to corridors and staff restaurants only.

Day rooms and TV rooms will also be bare of any tinsel or trees.

However, staff are doing their best to spread some festive spirit, while still isolating germs, by disinfecting those decorations that will be allowed, before putting them up in corridors.

James Catania, a consultant at Stepping Hill said: "This decision has not been taken lightly, but whilst the trust does not want to discourage creating a festive environment, the safety of patients must be paramount."

Patients at Manchester’s Christie Hospital however are guaranteed Grinch-free festivities with lights and tinsel still in place to brighten up wards.

Bev Hurst, the north-west region’s spokeswoman for National Concern for Healthcare Infections, said: "Hospitals need to concentrate on getting the basics right - a visitor who doesn’t clean their hands or a ward that isn’t cleaned properly will pose more of a risk than a properly cleaned decoration hung away from the bed area."

I am fully behind the decorations ban. Everyome knows our hospitals are cess pits of disease and filth - the last thing we need are bits of tinsel and pine needles falling into someone's chest cavity during open heart surgery.

Furthermore, if hospital is all nice and Xmassy where's the insentive to get better and leave?!? Lazy malingerers will stay in hospital over Xmas just to avoid putting up decorations in their own homes.
