Concern for missing river man

POLICE are becoming increasingly concerned for the welfare of a man that was seen to jump into the River Goyt, close to Littlemoor Football Club on Welkin Road, Bredbury.

Officers spotted a man jumping into the river just before 3pm on Wednesday January 16. He was seen to follow the flow of the river towards the town centre - where the river merges with the River Tame to form the River Mersey - before officers lost sight of him.

The man is described as white, aged between 30 and 40 with short hair. He was wearing a fluorescent jacket, jeans and boots.

Chief Inspector Andrew Harty said: "We are becoming extremely concerned for the welfare of this man. I am hoping he has managed to swim ashore and is safe and well as the river is very cold and dangerous.

"I am appealing directly to this man to let us know you are safe and well and for anyone else that may have seen him to contact police."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Greater Manchester Police on 856 5050 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Despite the previous sentiments, I do not believe policemen are paid to commit suicide to compensate for failed "care in the community".

I can't believe the police nowaday's, they see a man jump in a river and leave him to it, then say get in touch to let us know your alright. what the hell is wrong with the world lately???

Just like the police that left the little boy to drown because they wasn't qualified to jump in. What exactly is a police officers role nowadays???
