Never forgotten - our fallen heroes of SS Stockport
Kirsty Elleray27/ 2/2008
STOCKPORT residents paid their respects at a moving memorial parade held in Hazel Grove to remember the fallen heroes of the SS Stockport.
Military veterans and the Royal Navy Association Hazel Grove Branch, along with members of the public gathered at Hazel Grove train station to remember the 64-man crew.
The White Ensign Association of Shaw Heath, accompanied by a local naval band, then lead a march up to Norbury Parish Church for a memorial service.
The hospital rescue ship, whose wartime role was to escort convoys across the Atlantic, mysteriously disappeared in the North Atlantic on February 24, 1943, and is believed to have been sunk by a German submarine, but to this day no one knows the exact details of her last moments.
Derek Doherty, treasurer of the Hazel Grove Royal Navy Association, said: "On behalf of all the ex-service men and families, thank you to the people of Stockport for still making the effort to remember the men who lost their lives in service of country."
