Boxers' Cuban adventure

A COMPSTALL group have just returned from fighting some of the world’s best amateur boxers in Cuba.
Members of Bredbury ABC spent 10 days on the island where they took part in the Stockport v Havana tournament.
The youngsters notched up four wins out of seven bouts. Victorious were Chris Healey, George Wilson, Liam Taylor and Liam Hanrahan with good performances from Dale Arrowsmith, Adam Drabble and Martyn Lee.
However, for head coach Roy Richardson, the visit fulfilled a lifetime ambition.
Roy and assistant coach Eric Hesketh accompanied the boxers in their training camp in Havana, where potential Olympic athletes from Venezuela and Trindad and Tobago train.
The visit was organised through Roy’s contacts with Cuban coaches. Roy explained: "It’s taken many months organising such a trip, but it’s been well worth it. Our lads have gained an awful lot at the college, where staff made us all welcome and offered tremendous hospitality in a country where there are only basic facilities."
