Don't suffer abuse in silence, pleads young victim
13/ 3/2008
THE brave victim of a Cheadle sex attacker has spoken out to encourage other young Asian girls not to suffer abuse in silence.
Piyush Jain, 37, of Park Lodge Close, was sentenced to 14 months' imprisonment last month after he was found guilty of three counts of indecent assault.
And now his victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has courageously decided to visit schools and community groups to tell of her ordeal.
She wants other victims to come forward and not be put off by the perceived shame that could be brought upon their family by a subject that is considered a taboo in the Asian community.
The abuse took place in 1995 and 1996 but the victim took almost a decade to report it and suffered years of anguish - with numerous suicide attempts - before beginning to come to terms with what happened.
She said: “This horrifying experience has prevented me becoming the women I dreamt I would one day become. I carry more anger and hatred towards him now rather than sadness. I want to share my case with other Asians because I know how much the family name and cultural pressures restrict us from applying for justice.
“I feel proud to know I am doing my best to protect other victims and that’s what I want others to do. I want to share my experience and educate others so we can prevent abuse and give people like me a chance to get justice and start a new life in the best way possible.”
Even after the case, which was heard at Bolton Crown Court, the victim is still undergoing medical treatment. But she intends to produce a booklet and a website, where other victims can report abuse, ahead of her school visits. It is hoped they can begin within six months.
Although her parents are firmly behind what she is doing even they had an initial reaction of “you can't tell anyone” and “no one will marry you” when she revealed what had happened.
Her father said: “She is a brilliant child who has gone through a traumatic time. She was so brave she never told us she had been abused for a long time.
“Her whole aim is to educate other people like her so they don't suffer in silence. This man has been sentenced to 14 months, my daughter has a scar for the rest of her life.”
