What a load of rubbish
19/ 3/2008
ANGRY residents and business people have hit out at gypsies who have left a huge mess in Lancashire Hill - and then moved on to the town centre.
More than 20 caravans parked on Penny Lane were moved on over the weekend, after the council gained a court order to secure the site.
But mounds of rubbish have been left behind and residents are demanding to know why there has been no tough action.
Margaret Garside uses the road to walk into Stockport, but said she has been avoiding it because she found the travellers intimidating. She told the Express the amount of rubbish was so great she could hardly walk down the road, and said they should now feel the full force of the law.
She added: "It‘s just terrible. It looks like they‘ve been doing drives and about 30 lorryloads of stuff has been dumped.Something should be done about it - why can’t they get prosecuted? What’s the difference between them and us?"
And town centre retailers are complaining a new encampment on Shawcross Street is affecting trade.
A convoy appeared on three sites at Crown Royal industrial park over the weekend, including the employee car park of textile company Bennett Silks.
Warehouse manager Darren Edisbury said staff are having to park on double yellow lines when they come into work, adding: "The police said they can‘t do anything."
Geoff Barker, of neighbouring textile company SDL Atlas, added: "Stockport Council are always very good at congratulating themselves about being a great place to do business but it doesn‘t look very good when there’s rubbish strewn everywhere."
A Council spokesman said clean-up of Penny Lane will begin today (Wednesday). He added they have commissioned an assessment of travellers’ needs tthat could lead to Council land being allocated for their use.
Firefighters were called to the Penny Lane encampment in the early hours of Saturday, where a caravan had been set alight. There were no injuries.
