Is pub confused over identity..?

26/ 3/2008

YOU might be forgiven for thinking that Cosmopolitan is a strange choice of name for a pub with this sign on its walls. But you’d be wrong.

The new Heaton Norris venue is gay-owned and gay-friendly, but just making the point it isn’t exclusive.

What was once the Three Crowns is now a vibrant, happy hub that welcomes all.

Licensee Phil Mccrea said: "We opened as a straight, gay and lesbian bar. I’m straight, but I have gay friends and family. We’d like to bring together the gay and straight community as times have changed and we now think homophobia was a thing of the 90s and acceptance is now easier for everyone.

"The sign was badly worded and it’s going, but what it means is that we welcome everyone."

The pub has a strict dress code of smart casual and is making a special effort to enforce a zero tolerance attitude to any trouble.

Phil has a late licence, unique in the district, for 1am closing on Thursday and Sunday, 2am Friday and Saturday.

He said: "We have opened the Cosmopolitan for the straight, gay and lesbian communities of Stockport. The only other place to go is the gay village in which the travel becomes a strain on the time of day people like to socialise and we become a convenience close to Stockport.

"Everybody can be happy being who they are here," said Phil, 30. "And that means everybody - including families. "If there are still people out there who have a problem with our open approach, we won’t miss their custom."

Why don't we have just pubs? Do they have to be gay or straight? What would happen if we had a white pub or a black pub? Facilities are for everyone to use lawfully regardless of colour, beliefs or sexuality. Apart from that,in many areas now,the age of the pub is finished. Many are being boarded up because they are no longer desireable places for ordinary people to go ,,i.e they are often centres for crime, the likelihood of a good kicking or else a chavs social club.
