Brave Cheadle mum goes beyond the call of duty to apprehend teenager

2/ 4/2008

A FEARLESS Cheadle mum hunted down a suspected robber and held on to him for almost ten minutes as he kicked and punched her in a bid to escape.

Elle Hynd, who is 5ft 5in tall, spotted the teenage thug jump on a bus after allegedly carrying out a bag snatch outside her home. She immediately followed the single decker bus in her car until it pulled up at the next stop.

Elle, a 38-year-old artist, then raced on board and overcame the 16-year-old boy in a frenzied tussle.Despite the teenager towering above her at 6ft, and with blows ‘raining down’ on her, Elle refused to let go of him.

Now the mother-of-one, who suffered cut and bruises, has been praised by the police for going ‘above and beyond the call of duty’.

Elle said: "As I was dialling the police he ran at me and tried to elbow me out of the way. We ended up tussling and were bouncing all over the bus. He was about 6ft and was punching me. The driver stopped the bus and came and helped me and we managed to grab an arm each while a passenger called police. It took a while - he kept trying to break free but we held on."

When police arrived at the scene on Cheadle Road, on March 25, they arrested the teenager on suspicion of assault and theft. He has been bailed pending further enquiries. They also recovered the 53-year-old female victim’s bag and gave it back to her.

Inspector David Turner paid tribute to Elle’s bravery. He said: "She received quite a beating at the hands of the offender yet she courageously held on to him as he rained blows down on her."

Exactly, what's the point of catching him if they let the little scrote out again straight away?
