Robbers flee flying pint glasses

16/ 4/2008

A GANG of would-be armed robbers were forced to flee empty handed when they were chased off by a club steward - who threw pint glasses at them.

Officers are investigating the possibility that the incident could be linked to a robbery a short time later at the Kro Bar, in Heaton Moor - see above report.

The six thugs - who carried metal bars and an ice pick - burst into Hazel Grove Reform Club, on Napier Street, on Sunday, April 6 at around 12.20am screaming for everyone to get on the floor. But a heroic club member decided he would stand up to the robbers and lashed out at one, sending him sprawling. And then the club steward began hurling glasses at the remainder, who panicked and ran off.

The member, who did not want to be named, said: "My wife shouted behind you and I saw a man who had a bar, I thought he was going to hit me so I lashed out.  They came in screaming at us to get on the ‘effing floor’ and I thought if we do that we are finished. But if the steward had not been so quick there would have been a major problem, it was raining glasses. The feeling afterwards was just relief, we’d just been enjoying a social evening. These people are scum, there’s no other word."

Once the robbers had escaped all the doors were locked and the police called. In the commotion one on the gang lost his baseball cap, which police have taken away to examine.

Police are investigating the possibility that the incident could be linked to a robbery a short time later at Kro Bar, in Heaton Moor.
