Shocking sex attack on woman, 71

A QUIET family park became a crime scene this week, after a 71-year-old woman was savagely attacked.

As families and dog walkers were out enjoying the sun in Bruntwood Park, Cheadle on Friday, a pervert struck, violently attacking the pensioner and leaving her traumatised, and with a broken collar bone.

The 71-year-old was out with her dog at around 4.30pm when she was suddenly grabbed from behind as she walked through a wooded area.

The man, who has been branded by other park users as ‘a sick animal’, threw her roughly to the ground and indecently assaulted her, before running away.

His victim was left badly hurt by the brutal attack, which police say must have happened just a few feet from where families and other walkers were enjoying the warm weather. Now other park users say there are worried about their own safety.

Dad-of-two Geoff Lawrenson, 39, who lives nearby said: "Where can people go now to be safe? I’m scared for my children, I normally keep a close eye on them but it makes you think how for just a moment of distraction you can pay the price."

And Sheila Collinson, 53, added: "The attacker sounds like an animal. What a sick and twisted individual to do that to a defenceless old lady. I hope they catch him."

Among regular users of the park are archery group the Bowmen of Bruntwood, who sent a warning email to members, after hearing about the assault. Their president Steve Ash said: "It is absolutely disgusting and horrible that something like that can happen in the park in the middle of the day.

The park is huge and there are areas around the periphery where only dog walkers go. We will warn people to be aware and vigilant."

Police have appealed for witnesses and describe the violent thug as a slim, white male, aged 18-25 and around 5ft 2in tall. He had a round, clean shaven face, cropped mousy hair and a nervous manner.

Det Insp Terry Sweeney, of Stockport CID said: "Not only has this woman been physically harmed, but she has also been left very shaken by this attack. What this man has done to this woman is awful and we need to bring him to justice. However, attacks of this nature are rare."

Yesterday Police Community Support Officers could still be seen in the park on high-visibility patrols.

Anyone with information can contact police on 856 9855 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Stockport Age Concern offers safety advice on 480 1211.
