Homes evacuated in blast fear

Dean Kirby
9/ 6/2008

HOMES were evacuated amid fears a gas cylinder found in a fire could explode.

People in about 10 houses in Reddish were told to leave the area after fire crews found the acetylene canister in the blaze at an industrial unit off Station Road.

The gas is highly volatile when heated and has to be cooled for 24 hours.

The crews used fixed jets to start cooling the cylinder after they put out the fire.

The residents were put up in hotels for the night. They were expected to be allowed back to their homes at lunchtime today (Monday).
