Hero fought off thugs with a cleaver

A BRAVE trainee store manager stood up to two gun-toting robbers, and fought them off with a meat cleaver, before flinging one into a wine display.

Matthew Cordon, 20, was working at the Cheadle Hulme Co-op, when he found himself staring down the barrel of a gun. However, undeterred, the have-a-go hero wrestled the firearm out of the robber’s grasp and then grabbed the store’s meat cleaver.

As wine from smashed bottles gushed over the floor, Matthew and a colleague fought off the thugs, before Matthew pinned gunman Jermaine Dunkley to the ground, where he kept him until police arrived.

And this week Dunkley, from Whalley Range began a long jail term, after pleading guilty to armed robbery at Minshull Street Crown Court. His accomplice, who ran off, has yet to be found.

Matthew, who has since left the Co-op, and hopes to become a police officer, recalled the moment he found himself facing a gun, but vowed he would do the same again.

He told us: "If it happened again I’d do the same thing. From the moment they split up I thought I’d take them on, though the moment he (Dunkley) kicked down the door and came in with a gun, was a shock.

"He pointed the gun at me and said ‘get off him’. I grabbed the gun and threw him head first into the wine display.Afterwards when the adrenalin has worn off you think what the hell did I just do? But I had no choice but to deal with them."

The accomplice, who apologised to Matthew, claimed he had not wanted to commit the robbery, before running away.

But Dunkley, 32, of Carlton Road, was this week given an indeterminate prison sentence and ordered to serve a minimum of six years. He had earlier pleaded guilty to armed robbery.

He had entered the Co-op last December with a stocking over his head, threatened a customer with the gun, later found to be an imitation, while the other man filled a duvet cover with cash from the till. By the time the accomplice went looking for the safe, Matthew had pushed a panic button.

Det Const Richard McCorry, of Stockport CID, said: "Due to the bravery of the staff and a customer, Dunkley was apprehended and has been brought to justice today. I am pleased this dangerous offender has been taken off the streets for a considerable period of time.

"Although the actions of the staff were extremely brave, I would appeal to anyone that may find themselves in a similar position to comply with any demands and contact the police at the earliest opportunity."

the way i see it, it was self defence, the guy had a gun on me, the other one could have been concealing weapons. i also didn't do it for the money, that's insured anyway, i did it because people like that shouldn't be allowed to get away with it, the next time they did it someone could easily have been hurt, i had an opportunity to stop them so i did.
