Man with knife exposes himself
Alex Scapens25/ 6/2008
POLICE have stepped up high visibility patrols to reassure parents after a pervert armed with a knife threatened to stab a young schoolgirl as she walked through a park.
The man exposed his genitals and demanded that the horrified pupil touch them as she returned home from school through Vernon Park, Offerton, on June 13 at around 3.40pm.
In response to the ‘opportunist’ attack, officers carried out a one-week anniversary patrol of the area and put a mobile police unit in the park on Friday (June 20).
Although not ruling out a second strike, detectives have said youngsters can minimise any risk of a repeat by remaining in groups and sticking to well-lit, well-used routes. Det Insp Kevin Dolan, from Stockport CID, said: "This would seem to be an opportunist attack on a lone female. We can’t exclude the possibility of it happening again but incidents like this are relatively rare. As long as reasonable precautions are taken the risk is minimised and we are putting a lot of resources towards ensuring this man is caught."
Sgt Julia Pigeon added: "This was a shocking incident. The girl was terrified and the offender is clearly dangerous and needs to be caught."
While walking through the park the girl spotted a white Volkswagen Golf - with blacked out windows and a full body kit - playing loud music with a black man in the passenger seat. When she turned to look again she was confronted, but managed to flee. Police describe the man as tall, muscular and black, aged around 30, having closely shaven hair with a swirled pattern cut into the back.
He spoke with a deep-voiced Manchester accent and wore a black fitted sleeveless top with black tracksuit bottoms and a diamond stud in his left ear. Detectives have appealed for witnesses to the incident and for anyone who may have seen the car in other Stockport parks in the surrounding days.
They have said it is not linked to the two recent sex attacks in Bruntwood Park, Cheadle. Visitors to Vernon Park have been left disgusted by the incident.
Mum Hayley Edwards, 24, of Offerton, said: "It makes you more alert as, although the park is open, you could easily be dragged off into the bushes. This man is evil and weird, some people are just born bad."
Lilian Hall, 64, of Cheadle, added: "He should be castrated and locked up for a long time, he is obviously not right in the head. You should be able to walk through a park on your own."
A spokesman for Stockport Council’s park managers added: "We are very sorry to hear of the serious incident. We do all we can to ensure the safety of all park users. In Vernon Park we have permanent, on-site staff who provide seven day a week cover."
Anyone with information can call Stockport CID on 856 9755 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

A one-week anniversary! Is anniversary another casualty of present day English like what she is spoken?
Pedant mode to off: these blokes with the pop out trousers really are a menace. They either need psychiatric treatment in a secure place or simply straight to the slammer. Once inside, I wonder how keen they'd be at getting their bits out and keeping them.
