Blind pensioner conned by ‘disgraceful’ burglar

POLICE have offered safety advice and warned elderly residents to remain vigilant after two Stockport pensioners - including a blind woman - were targeted in bogus burglaries.

It is believed the incidents - on Hempshaw Lane, Offerton, last Tuesday (June 17) at 4pm, and Lyme Grove, Shaw Heath, just over an hour later - could be linked.

In the first incident a man knocked at the door of a 92-year-old woman and was invited in after he claimed to be waiting for a neighbour who was out.

But after asking for a drink and to use the toilet he left without taking anything and is described as a chubby male wearing blue overalls.

At 5.15pm a blind 88-year-old woman was targeted. A man again claimed to be waiting for a neighbour to gain entry to her house.

Inside he asked use the toilet and then stole two purses containing cash, a bus pass and a pension card while the woman was getting him a glass of water.

The woman was only able to describe the man as smelling oily.

Detective Inspector Kevin Dolan, from Stockport CID, said: "Someone who would prey on older members of the population and take advantage of them is particularly heartless. We are looking into whether the two incidents are linked as there are certain similarities including the times, asking for water, the oily smell and the overalls. Anyone who is prepared to act in such a disgraceful manner and steal from a blind lady in her 80s should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. This individual needs to be caught and dealt with as soon as possible. But there are a few simple steps people can take to prevent this kind of thing happening to them."

Residents have been advised to always ask for ID if someone calls round unexpectedly.

And if there are any doubts to not let them in or ask them to return when a family member or friend is present.

Also, when appointments are made with utility company staff a password can be arranged beforehand for the caller to give upon arrival. In addition door chains are useful items to have fitted.

Anyone with information on either incident can contact Stockport CID on 856 9755 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
