What made the Mersey run RED?

THE Environment Agency has launched an appeal for help to solve the mystery of the red river.

The appeal was made after the River Mersey, which runs through the centre of Stockport, appeared to turn red on Thursday.

The incident happened on the stretch or river between Merseyway and the Pyramid, and although the Environment Agency sent an officer to the scene, preliminary investigations proved fruitless.

A spokeswoman from the Environment Agency said: "The initial investigations that were carried out on that afternoon were inconclusive.

"It appears that the heavy rain in Stockport on Thursday dispersed the colouration in the water before extensive tests could be completed. We are urging individuals and businesses in Stockport who may have information about the incident to contact the Environment Agency."

Despite the mystery surrounding the incident, Matthew Sutcliffe of the Mersey Basin Campaign says the level of interest shows a change in attitude towards the environment.

"It’s great to see the public being the eyes and ears of the Environment Agency. The river is healthier than ever before because people will no longer accept routine pollution. This case is a perfect example - if people see something wrong with the river they report it, which is exactly the right thing to do."

If you have any information about the incident in the River Mersey you can contact the Environment Agency’s incident hotline on 0800 807060.
