Licensee robbed at knifepoint

BRAZEN robbers held a landlord at knifepoint to steal thousands of pounds from a Bredbury pub – then used a bike to escape.

The two men entered the Queens Arms, on Higher Bents Lane, through an unlocked door on Saturday (July 5) at around 10am.

They searched the pub for its licensee and, on finding him in the upstairs office, both threatened him with what police say were large knives and demanded he hand over cash.

Loaded with a four-figure sum of money, the robbers made off.

Police are now appealing for information and believe the unusual time of the day for a robbery means there could be witnesses to it.

Det Insp Terry Sweeney, from Stockport CID, said: "The licensee has been left shocked and stressed as to how he is going to make up the four-figure sum he lost.

"This incident took place in broad daylight in a busy part of Stockport so it is possible a member of the public could have seen something.

"I would ask anyone with information to get in contact."

Police say one of the robbers is thought to have used a silver mountain bike to flee the scene.

It is believed the licensee had been unable to visit the bank to pay in the week’s takings as his car had broken down.

Officers say one of the men is white, of slim build, around 5ft 11in tall, with a local accent and wore a black hooded top.

The other is described as white, 5ft 2in tall and of stocky build.
