76 arrested in police swoop on offenders

A LARGE-SCALE crackdown on anti-social behaviour in Stockport targeting wanted and prolific offenders has seen 76 arrests in less than three weeks.

Police have targeted the borough’s hotspots - including North Reddish, Cheadle and the Heatons - in Operation Antidote, which began on July 4.

Four teams and a total of 36 officers have used mobile video units to secretly film offenders, a mobile police station, and stop and search powers to blitz parks and other known hangouts. And the operation has recovered weapons and stolen cars as well as reducing the number of burglaries committed in the borough.

It was introduced to combat the expected surge in anti-social behaviour and crime expected to coincide with summertime and school holidays.

Chief Insp Stuart Barton said: "We want to get the message out that people who cause these sort of problems will be dealt with.

"The main aim of this operation is to improve the quality of life for all residents in Stockport by robustly tackling anti-social behaviour and crime by actively targeting wanted and prolific offenders.  We have had significant arrests for robbery and recovered weapons."

The operation will continue throughout the summer and could even last until Christmas. It has also seen fixed penalty notices issued and visits to off-licenses to discourage sales of alcohol to the underaged.

Chief Insp Barton added: "We plan to make life increasingly difficult for those engaging in criminal activity and as this operation gathers pace in forthcoming weeks we will be using a variety of tactics. Police community support officers are making house visits to residents who have reported problems in their area to keep them up-to-date with what police are doing. We rely on support and information from the public and it is vital that people report their problems to us so that we can effectively tackle them."

This is great news and this initiative is to be applauded. Antisocial beahviour and general yobbery goes largely unpunished, police are busy with more serious crime but the fact that they are paying attention to this issue is very positive. Lets make Stockport a better place to live.

Every campaign must start with a single event. It also probably took a lot of organising within available resources. To maintain that intensity would need more resources.

Giving the scuffs a "well done" might be more constructive than complaining that they should be doing more.
