Alec Rogers
Pet ban for man who deserted puppies
Cheryl Latham8/ 8/2008
A MAN who left six puppies in filthy conditions while he went away on holiday has been banned from keeping animals.
Alec Rogers' 10-week-old Staffordshire Bull Terriers were found by inspectors in a freezing, dark outhouse, caked in muck. Three of the dogs - who were all underweight - later died from canine parvo virus.
A court heard the animals were found last November on a stone floor, whimpering and huddled together to keep warm.
They had only one small, dirty plastic bed between them.
There was on 'overwhelming smell' when inspectors approached the outhouse, on Braddon Road, Woodley, Stockport. The pups had worms and had been licking their matted fur in a bid to clean themselves.
Rogers, 21, of Heaton Norris, had intended to sell the pups to make money for Christmas, Stockport Magistrates heard.
Rogers had left the six pups in the care of Michael Emme, 25, while he went on holiday for a week. He said he was disgusted when he saw the conditions his friend had left the dogs in.
But Rogers, also known as Thomas Spencer, pleaded guilty to failure to prevent unnecessary suffering to the pups.
Magistrates' chairman Andy Stewart called the case 'horrific' and banned Rogers from keeping animals for 10 years.
He was ordered to do 150 hours of unpaid community work and must pay £250 compensation.
Emme has already pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering and was held in custody until today for reports.
