Robbers brandish a two-foot machete

THESE dramatic pictures show the terrifying moment two armed raiders tried to smash their way through a Post Office counter.

The men - who were armed with a claw hammer and two-foot machete - swooped at the branch on Stockport Road, Romiley, on Wednesday (August 6) just before 10am.

They confronted the postmaster and postmistress and demanded cash before trying to smash through the security screen. On the way in one had propped the door open with a brick to aid a quick getaway.

Bosses at the Post Office have now offered a ‘substantial’ reward for the men’s capture.

Detective Constable Philip Hargreaves, of Stockport CID, said: "The CCTV images recovered clearly show the intent of the offenders, who tried to force their way behind the counter of the post office.

"Thankfully no one was injured, however, the type of weapons used and the level of force shown in the attempted robbery demonstrates how dangerous these individuals are. I would ask anyone who may recognise the offenders from their clothing - or who perhaps knows who is responsible - to come forward and speak to police."

The robbers fled empty-handed, using a blue VW Golf and driving off towards the centre of Romiley. Detectives have appealed for witnesses and describe the crooks as white males wearing balaclavas.

The Post Office has confirmed it is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible.

A spokesman said: "The size of the reward would depend on the nature of the information received but if it did lead to a conviction it would be substantial. Nobody was hurt in the incident although the staff involved were understandably shaken. We are working closely with the police investigation."

He added that the Post Office had been closed until Friday afternoon (August 8) for repairs and may need to close again for the work to be finished.

Anyone with any information can contact Stockport CID on (0161) 856 9840 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

These scum are prepared to kill and are probably from the Stockport area. Marple Bridge post office was attacked last year and the postmaster badly injured by a machete. Someone must know them, give them up before they kill someone.
