Families’ tribute to accident victims

Rob Dawson

THE families of two men who died when the car they were in careered into a house, have paid tribute to "two wonderful boys".

Gareth McMahon, of Brookfield Road, Cheadle, and Richard Lloyd, of Granville Road, Adswood, both 20, died after they lost control of a Vauxhall Astra which overturned, colliding with a caravan in the driveway of a house in Alderdale Road, Cheadle Hulme.

Fire crews tried to cut the two men out of the car, but paramedics later pronounced them dead at the scene.

Gareth McMahon’s family said: "Gareth was a much-loved son, brother, grandson and nephew. This is a tragic accident and we are deeply sorry for the loss of two wonderful boys. Gareth will be missed by all his loving friends and family."

The family of Richard Lloyd added: "Richard was a loving son and grandson, who would do anything for family and friends, and he will be missed by all."

According to witnesses, the car - which police believe was stolen from nearby Radnormere Drive - lost control as it came to the junction of Councillor Lane and Birdhall Lane in Cheadle Hulme.

It is thought that the car - said to have been travelling at around 60mph - crossed Councillor Lane and swerved across Ladybridge Road, where it clipped a curb and ploughed through a fence and into the caravan parked on Derek Cox’s driveway on Alderdale Road.

Mr Cox, a 58-year-old works manager, said: "I woke up in the night and I thought someone was in the house. Then I went to the window and saw the neighbours out in the street and smoke coming from the caravan. I couldn’t see the lads inside the car because the windscreen was shattered. It wasn’t until the fire brigade took the roof off the car that police told me there were two lads inside."

Adam Norton and Caine McMahon - Gareth McMahon’s uncles and also friends of Richard Lloyd - were two of the first family members at the scene on Friday morning.

Mr Norton said: "Everyone is in shock. I just needed to come down and see where it happened. I was with him five minutes before. I thought he had just gone back to his mate’s house."

Caine McMahon added: "I’m still in shock and it hasn’t really sunk in yet. They were both typical young lads who both just really enjoyed life."

Lee Norton, another of Gareth’s uncles, described him as a typical, fun-loving young man.

He said: "He was funny, daft and could always put a smile on your face. But this mess is a lesson. I’ve told them to never, never do anything like this, but nobody listens."

well-lovely to see some nice comments on here but incredibly hurtfull to see those by strangers trying to voice their opinion on two young lads that they know nothing about- apart from what they have read. Gareth and Richard were both lovely lads and had hearts of gold, not only were they incredible guys they were loved by all there family and friends and are sadly missed- my thought and love goes out to all affected by this tragic situation and hope that those who are shallow enough to write hurtful comments will spare a though for those grieving and have some respect for the families and friends of two young gents who died in a mistake that they made, they were still good lads and good friends.rest in peace lads take care of each other and know that you are being missed by all.
