Stockport on track for London 2012...

STOCKPORT is all set to play a leading role in the preparations for the next Olympic Games - as Beijing passed the Olympic torch to London.

And Stockport marked the official Olympic flag handover with a flag raising event of its own.

A specially-commissioned flag was flying proudly over Stockport Town Hall on Sunday (August 24) to celebrate the historic handover from Beijing to London, and to demonstrate Stockport’s commitment to London 2012.

Stockport will certainly be playing its part in the run up to the next Olympic Games, after Grand Central Pools on Wellington Road South was selected by British Swimming as a national centre of excellence for London 2012.

Grand Central Pools, along with Woodbank Park Athletics Stadium, have also been included in London’s 2012 official pre-games training camp guide.

Councillor Shan Alexander, executive member for leisure, said: "This is an occasion for the whole country to celebrate and participate in welcoming the world to London and the UK in four years time.

"Here in Stockport we will be wholeheartedly embracing London 2012. The Olympic Games are a great opportunity to get inspired and get active, and Stockport’s many parks and high-quality leisure centres are the ideal place to start."

Nice photo of the first passengers on the next gravy train out of the "Olympic Event" station.

Just how much did your "specially commissioned" flag cost us and how about finding yourselves some work you were elected to do?

So says Shan Alexander. How does she square this with your other 'sporting' story this week - that Stockport's sporting facilities are sub-standard, and need major capital investment to make them attractive?

I think I hear the sound of hypocrisy again.
