Mum grieves for murdered son, killed days before his release

THE mother of a Stockport man murdered in prison says her son’s last days were filled with excitement as he prepared to come home.

But there was no happy reunion for heart-broken mum Glenys Beaver, as her son Ryan was killed in prison shortly before his due release date.

This week, in an exclusive interview, Glenys paid tribute to her ‘loving son’ Ryan, who she had visited just four days before he was seriously hurt in an assault at Forest Bank prison in Salford.

The 35-year-old dad-of-three, from Reddish, was found unconscious on Friday morning and was immediately taken to hospital, but died later from his injuries.

Glenys said this week she was still in shock as she tried to come to terms with her youngest son’s death.

"Ryan was so happy and loving and he always knew how to make you laugh," she recalled. "So many people have sent cards and kind words have come in to us from everyone who knew him, he was so well liked.  Ryan was always there for you when you needed him, no matter what, and was such a kind and thoughtful person.  He was full of fun and could always make you feel good and put a smile on your face. He loved sports, especially football, and was so close to all of his family - he thought of his brothers as his best friends.  He loved his family so much, as we did him, especially his children.  We saw him last Monday and he was really looking forward to coming home at the end of the month. I just can’t believe it’s happened."

Ryan was serving three months for assault at the privately-run Forest Bank prison in Agecroft.

The former Reddish Vale pupil was taken to hospital after being found near his cell at 9.15am on Friday. Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The pair, aged 27 and 20, have been remanded until November 3 2008, pending further inquiries.

Ryan leaves his mum, dad, two brothers, two sons, a daughter and a girlfriend.

Are punctuation marks rationed this week? They do make a difference to the meaning.

While reasonably confident that Mr Beaver was no angel, he had clearly served his time. He most certainly should have been afforded the protection of HM's Prison Service, who's responsibilities go far beyond simply depriving convicts of their freedom. Who ever did such a thing to him are either too stupid to have thought through the consequences or, more likely, hold our Institutions in such contempt that they hold no fear.

The family are heart broken. They need everyones prayers. No one should die like this. No matter what they have done there is no reason to take another persons life. I just hope justice is done for Ryan. Where were the prison guards? It disgusts me what some people have become. The family loved Ryan dearly and will ALWAYS love him. The family must take comfort in knowing death is merely the beginning of an eternity of happiness and one day they will see him again. Our prayers are with the family and friends.
