Mum fears for baby in violent gang raid
Cheryl Latham24/ 9/2008
A TRAUMATISED mother has told how she clung on to her terrified baby as masked men broke into her home and robbed her family.
The 24-year-old, of Anglesey Grove, Cheadle Hulme, was sitting on the couch with her boyfriend and their two-year-old daughter when three men in balaclavas smashed the patio doors and stormed into the living room.
While one of the men screamed at the mother-of-one to hand over her car keys, the other two pinned her 22-year-old boyfriend to the ground and bound his wrists.
The masked men stole a watch, a handbag and the family’s black Audi A3. The car was recovered a short distance up the road, but the terrifying ordeal has left the family feeling insecure in their own home.
"The bricks smashed through the window and I didn’t have time to think. I just instantly grabbed my little girl and tried to keep her away from them as they started shouting for my car keys," said the full-time mum.
"All I was bothered about was my little girl. One of them kept screaming at me for the car keys and he was right in my daughter’s face. She was absolutely terrified and I just kept tight hold of her. I kept telling her not to worry. I told her that it was all just a game and they would go away soon to try and calm her down. I was trying to get them away from us. And when my boyfriend tried to protect us they pinned him to the ground and two of them sat on him. There was nothing we could do, we were so frightened. I handed to keys over to him and they got off in the car. None of it has sunk in yet. I can’t believe someone would break into your house like that when you are just sat watching TV with your family. I don’t feel safe in my own home at the moment. We’re really security conscious already, but this will just make me take even more care."
The only description police have of the men is that they were all wearing dark clothing, balaclavas and gloves. It is not known if the men were armed.
Detective Inspector Kevin Dolan of Stockport CID said: "This was a terrifying ordeal for the family. The offenders smashed their way into the house before threatening the couple, who also had a young child in the house. Fortunately no one was seriously injured, but these men must be caught. I would appeal to anyone who may know who is responsible, or who may have witnessed the incident on Monday between 8.30pm and 8.45pm to come forward and speak to police."
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Stockport CID on 856 9840 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
