Second ram-raid may force trader to close for good

THE owner of a New Mills newsagents believes he will struggle to recover after a gang of thieves ram-raided his shop stealing over £14,000 worth of stock and charity cash.

The raiders backed a silver Audi into the front of Longton Newsagents, trading as Costcutter, on Albion Road just before 4am last Wednesday (September 24) smashing through the shop window.

Two thieves got out of the car and stole a large quantity of cigarettes, alcohol and £400 in cash before getting back into the vehicle.

The car was driven by a third suspect and the thieves, all wearing balaclavas, drove off towards Union Road traffic lights, then onto Albion Road and finally driving onto Market Street. Police are investigating whether the car was stolen.

This was the second time in 12 months that the newsagents has been targeted and owner Masud Yaqub admitted, with Christmas on the way, the business will struggle badly.

He said: "We still haven’t recovered properly from the last raid. The whole shop frontage which was brand new is so badly damaged it will cost thousands to replace.  We are suffering really badly, the outlook is bleak and profits are low. With Christmas on the way we have lots of stock to buy but we have limited cash, the insurance will come through but who knows when. It is distressing and I am heartbroken. The fact they stole charity boxes shows how low they are. We need the police to take more action."

Inquiries are continuing and police have made an appeal for witnesses - if you can help call Derbyshire Police on 0845 123 3333 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

wouldn't it be cheaper to erect bollards, like the ones they use in the city centre for the bus lanes, to stop this criminal behaviour? or would it take the council 2 years to approve it, and by that time you would be bankrupt!!!!
