County match forced to stop after fans clash

8/10/2008

STOCKPORT County has praised the club stewards after violence erupted during their derby win against Oldham Athletic at Edgeley Park on Friday night.

Troubled flared after some Athletic fans - who had bought tickets in County’s Cheadle Stand - began celebrating Andy Liddell’s opening goal mid-way through the first half.

Fighting ensued and spilled onto the side of the pitch, when the referee was forced to stop the game for a couple of minutes.

Police moved in to quell trouble and several blooded fans were escorted away by officers and stewards.

A spokesperson for Stockport County said: "Following the events on Friday night, Stockport County would like to announce they do not condone violence of any kind. Those involved in leading the isolated incident of violence have been identified.

"And the club would like to thank the stewards on duty for their prompt reaction which also gained praise from the match referee.

"In a situation which was difficult to manage, the club are satisfied that through the efforts of the ticket office, the number of Oldham fans who succeeded in gaining tickets to County areas was reduced to an absolute minimum.

"As ever the club will continue to review arrangements on a match by match basis with the Police and Safety Officer. County have an excellent record of safety in the stadium which we will work hard to protect."

Some Oldham supporters blamed an allocation of only 2,000 tickets to the away supporters for the League One game.

The tickets sold out a week in advance, but were on general sale, leaving supporters able to purchase tickets from the Stockport ticket office on the night.

Order was restored and there was no other trouble before or after the incident. The Hatters went on to beat Athletic 3-1.

Latics chief executive Alan Hardy said: "I was there and aware of the trouble.

"It seems to have been caused by Oldham Athletic supporters in the Stockport end, which breaches crowd regulations."

He said Oldham had asked for more tickets but Stockport did not increase their allocation.

While that was disappointing, he sympathised with Stockport as there are restrictions on how many fans can attend and any decision is made in consultation with police.

Police reported no further fighting within or outside the ground.

What does anybody expect from the neanderthals who attend football matches. Annoyed season ticket holder should meet brassed off motorist trying to get to work when county is spilling out and these idiots just stroll across the road in front of moving vehicles and then spew obscenities at drivers who are trying to edge their way through. They should make all matches viewable on pay to view TV only therefore removing the ability of so-called law abiding football supporters to cause trouble in or outside the ground.

This would not have happened if Norman Beverley was still chairman
