Town in line for 110-bedroom hotel

15/10/2008

A NEW riverside hotel is set to be built on Heaton Lane, Stockport.

Developers say plans to build the 110 bedroom hotel, on the Kwik Fit site underneath the viaduct, have not been affected by the current financial climate and the build should be underway by Easter 2009.

Hotel operator Accor are interested in taking on the hotel to build good value accommodation in the heart of Stockport.

Plans for a riverside walkway are set to integrate the contemporary design of the development, which also includes office space and 35 apartments, into the backdrop of the Grade II listed viaduct.

Manchester-based Indigo Planning Ltd are dealing with the application on behalf of South African investment fund Cires. Peter Jennings, of Indigo Planning, said: "This is a huge development for Stockport, especially after some other companies have recently pulled out of building in the town. The hotel will be visible from the M60 and will have a visual impact on people coming into the town for the first time. It seems the hotel industry has not been affected by the credit crunch and the operator is keen to get the planning stage underway to start development next year. "

Councillor Kevin Hogg, executive member for regeneration, said: "This is the first of many hotels that are trying to come to Stockport. We’re in an excellent position; just two hours from London, right on the motorway and really close to the airport. We’ve got seven other hotels trying to come to the area, including the Hilton chain. So in difficult times we’re not sitting worrying, this is a great opportunity for the town."

I do so hope all the anti car idiots have been put on the naughty step while the planning meeting takes place otherwise nobody will invest in this town.

Did I read that correctly? South African investment? Is there truly no money in the United Kingdom? The Planning Department would probably approve a site next to the viaduct for NASA to launch rockets to the moon and say it has good transport links.
